For nature enthusiasts, Northern Norway offers an untamed landscape to truly immerse yourself in.
On board the expedition ship Antigua, you’ll reach remote places that are normally difficult to access. Along the way, breathtaking panoramas and rare natural wonders unfold before you.
In winter, this remarkable region above the Arctic Circle reveals yet another dimension: the magical Northern Lights. Also known as Aurora Borealis, this awe-inspiring spectacle paints the sky in shifting shades of green, violet and blue — an unforgettable experience that never fails to impress.                      The barkentine Antigua sails to secluded anchorages and small harbours with minimal light pollution, giving you the best possible chance to witness the Northern Lights in all their splendour.

More information
Another highlight of the Norwegian winter is the frequent presence of whales. Drawn to the fjords in search of food, these majestic giants of the sea can often be observed here. Aboard the Antigua, we set out to encounter them in a respectful and authentic way, ensuring an unforgettable experience without disturbing their natural behaviour.

This winter voyage revolves around two wonders of the Arctic: the magical Northern Lights and the whales. The itinerary is flexible and shaped by nature itself — light, weather and wildlife guide our course. The captain adapts the route according to forecasts and whale sightings, so that every day holds the best possible chances for remarkable encounters. Surrounded by the pristine wilderness of the Arctic Ocean, this creates a truly unique winter adventure.

Your journey begins in Tromsø, a vibrant city where culture and nature meet. In the polar night, Tromsø shines as a beacon of warmth and light, earning its nickname “the Paris of the North.” Here, you’ll enjoy Norwegian hospitality, cosy cafés and an inviting atmosphere, before embarking on board the Antigua from 18:00. Once on board, you’ll meet your fellow travellers and the crew, and settle into your cabin. Weather permitting, the Antigua may set sail that very evening, or begin its Arctic voyage the following morning.

In October, daylight hours shorten rapidly. We use the bright mornings to search for whales, while the afternoon twilight bathes the polar landscape in enchanting colours. Along the way, we visit remote fishing villages and Sami reindeer communities, where time ashore allows for evening walks to soak in the beauty of untouched Arctic nature.

When the wind allows, the captain hoists the sails of the impressive three-masted barkentine, letting the Antigua glide quietly between majestic mountains and deep fjords. The silence and timelessness of the Arctic Ocean leave a lasting impression.

Possible harbours and anchorages: Andfjord, Senja, Andenes, Gryllefjord, Skrolsvik, Sommaroy, Burfjord, Hamnes, Uloya, Nord-Lenangen
Note: Wind and weather can have a significant impact on the trip. If necessary due to unforeseen circumstances, changes may be made to the route.

3. Oilskins are not necessary, but a good rainproof jacket, rain trousers and sturdy shoes are always good. Be it for hiking or helping on deck.
4. Don't forget warm clothing. You never know how long you are outside for. Breathtaking moment seem to last for-ever;)
5. A good book for a bit of solitude or a good parlour game to play together with your fellow sailors.
6. A camera! So that you can capture your memories and share them with those at home.
7. Cash, because here you can only pay your drinks bill in cash. But also think about the currency of the country you are travelling to so you can buy a souvenir.

Tips

Good to know: We have two types of cabins on the Antigua: the standard cabins with bunk beds, shower and toilet and the spacious comfort cabins with separate single beds, shower and toilet. There are therefore two different cabin prices on the Antigua. Would you like to travel alone and not share a cabin? Then you can book a single supplement, which corresponds to the normal cruise price + 50%.

Insider’s tip: Make sure to spend a little more time in Tromsø if you can. Despite its modest size, the city brims with attractions — from an aquarium and fascinating museums to the northernmost botanical garden on Earth. Adventure seekers can enjoy countless outdoor activities, and within minutes you’re surrounded by untouched landscapes ideal for hiking. In winter, dog sledding tours add an unforgettable touch to your Arctic stay.
