About our company

Passion for the sea, sailing ships and adventure is at the centre of the Tallship Company. For over 30 years, we have worked to build a fleet of authenticity and character, without compromising on luxury and comfort on board.

Jan and Jelle Bruinsma, the founders of Tallship Company, started their adventure in 1991 with the clipper Elizabeth on Dutch waters. This historic cargo ship was restored with loving attention to detail and converted into a stately three-master. This marked the start of a marvellous and dynamic voyage.

Our fleet consists of three impressive ships: the barque Artemis and the barquentines Atlantis and Antigua. Each of these ships has a unique past as a cargo ship, whaling vessel or lightship.

The Tallship Company is constantly pushing their boundaries. Our aim is to offer you an unforgettable and authentic sailing experience on modern, well-equipped ships. We combine tradition and modern comfort in a unique way. We invite you to share this experience with us on one of our voyages, a day trip or a harbour festival.

History

Everything about the company can be found here in a short summary.

1991

The brothers Jan en Jelle Bruinsma built the clipper Elizabeth together. This laid the foundation for the future of the Tallship Company.

1997

Captain Jan Bruinsma has been sailing on inland waters for several years ans is now tempted by the sea air. The brothers start building the three-masted topsail schooner Mare Frisium.

2001

Shipowner Jan Bruinsma's dream of a square-rigged ship is now being realised. Once again, construction continues for a year. The result is the barque Artemis, the crown jewel of the Bruinsma brothers.

2005

The Tallship Company expands its sailing area with the purchase of the barkentine Antigua. The Antigua is converted and equipped to become an expedition ship and now sails in the Arctic waters of Spitsbergen.

2006

Barkentine Atlantis is acquired, renovated and the fleet of the Tallship Company is expanded by another magnificent ship.

2016

The next major renovation: The Antigua is extended by 8 metres with a lot of love and sweat. The Mare Frisium is sold.

2024

And now, together with Jan and Jelle Bruinsma, around thirty employees work on the results of this dynamic and adventurous company every year. Hopefully many more years on the road to success!
