On board the expedition ship Antigua, nature lovers can indulge in the pristine landscape and unique natural phenomena of Northern Norway. During this trip you will sail through the awe inspiring panoramas and vistas to locations normally out of reach.

In winter, this exceptionally beautiful area of the world, far above the Arctic Circle offers even more magic: The Northern Lights. Also known as Aurora Borealis or Polar light, the Northern Lights are one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena on earth. With Antigua we visit places and ports without light pollution, so you have the best opportunities to view the Northern Lights. The splendour of green, purple, blue and rose coloured lights dancing across the sky will not disappoint.

Making this expedition during the Norwegian winter also offers the chance of whale watching. Nowhere else in the world are such large pods of whales visible than in Northern Norway. With Antigua we navigate the fjords to places where we find the largest mammals in the world hunting and feeding. From the ship we will spend time watching these incredible creatures with an uninterrupted view while remaining respectful of the animals in their natural habitat.

The magical Northern Lights and large pods of whales are central to this winter expedition. The route is therefore dependent on the circumstances such as weather conditions and whale locations. With this flexibility the captain of Antigua will navigate the expedition through the unspoiled landscapes in the Arctic Ocean, assuring the best opportunities for experiencing the wonders of nature and guaranteeing an unforgettable winter experience!

    Saturday 20. November
Your journey begins in Tromsø. This modern city in the Arctic is where culture meets nature. Tromsø, also known as Paris of the North is literally a light beacon during the polar night. During the short days of the dark season this city immerses you in the relaxing warmth of Norwegian cosines.

From 18:00 you may  board Antigua in Tromsø. Upon boarding you will  meet the crew of the ship, your traveling companions and have time to settle into the accommodations on board which will be your home for the coming days. Depending on the circumstances, we will sail out of the harbour the same evening, beginning the winter adventure.

Sunday 21. November up to and including Friday 26. November
While the days are dedicated to spotting whales and navigating towards the best places to admire the Northern Lights there is never a moment worth missing.  In an ambiance of peace and quiet the expedition will journey through the breath taking scenery of the landscape. With the days getting quickly shorter the twilight period magically reveals the secret beauty of the polar region.

Docking at twilight in the the small fishing and reindeer villages your heart will be stolen by the beauty and tranquillity. On shore you can taste the life that has been lived for centuries in the High North and be amazed by the unspoiled nature and history of the area as it glows in the phenomenon of the Northern Lights

With the sails of the impressive three-masted barkentine hoisted the silence and timelessness of the Arctic Ocean, the grand fjords and majestic mountains come together as Antigua glides through the water. Thursday we set course for our final destination Tromsø, arriving there; the warm and cosy light beacon in the dark High North in the evening.

    Possible ports and anchorages:
Andfjord, Senja, Andenes, Gryllefjord, Skrolsvik, Sommaroy, Burfjorden, Hamnnes, Uloya, Nord-Lenangen

    Saturday 27. November
After breakfast it is time to say goodbye to your traveling companions and the crew of the Antigua. Disembarking is at 9:00 am in Tromsø. The airport can be reached in 20 minutes by taxi.

If you have the time, then it is definitely worth taking the time to further explore Tromsø. In this bustling Arctic town you will find various attractions such as an aquarium, museums, and the northernmost botanical garden in the world. For lovers of outdoor activities there is also a lot to do, the city centre of Tromsø is a stone's throw from beautiful untouched nature to be easily explored with a casual walk or hike or trip with the dog sled.

Note: Wind and weather can influence the journey considerably. When necessary due to unforeseen circumstances significant changes to the route may be made. The last word is always from the  captain of Antigua. But even then, there are plenty of comparable alternatives to visit in the region

Antigua

On board the Antigua you are on a very special expedition ship. The three master has a specious center deck which enables you as guest to view the vast wilderness and animals of northernmost regions of Europe. The characteristic sailing ship counts three zodiacs used for excursions.

You’re immediately at home in the comfortable  and cosy salon of the ship, a perfect spot to wind down from a day at sea. As in the salon, the standard cabins are mahogany finished. For those who prefer slightly more comfort there are a few larger cabins with loose beds. All cabins have en-suite bathrooms with showers and toilets.

With the Barkentine Antigua you will reach regions where other ships won’t be able to sail. It’s for that reason that guests prefer to embark on our unique expeditions in arctic waters.
